Well, I have often come across this question "who's the luckiest person in the world?". I am not really planning to give my opinion on this question that easily. To the readers unknown to me ( I am sure there is noone falling in this category ) well I am studying in bits-pilani and I just completed my first year. I often used to spark off discussions with whoever I possibly could, about a theory I call "default engineers". I am sure all of you reading this will have this theory somewhere at the back of your mind, yet I list a few salient points of the theory :
1) Most of the people studying in bits are not really passionate about engineering as a subject
2) If given a chance they would choose other fields over engineering ( irrespective of the so called "risks and courage" needed to pursue those fields )
3) They landed up in bits due to some or the other reasons that would include parental pressure...brother or sister in bits, best friend is doing it, or they just simply go with the flow
4) They all are surely gonna pursue something other then engineering for rest of their lives
After I am finished with my theory and they are also convinced that yeah it's true, the instant flurry of questions would be
1)"what exactly are we doing in bits?"
2) "shouldn't we just do what we love to do irrespective of how it will make my dad feel or how much money it would fetch?"
after a bit of discussion they would also agree that "yes, we should but what and how do we find out what we want to do?" The discussion would invariably hit a dead-end at this point. The motive of writing a post here is not really to address that question and frankly i dont know what the answer is, really. Though, I feel I have something more to say.
Here it goes, well, once you DO find it out, its gonna bring you that eternal joy and happiness that every human being on this planet earth is looking for, somewhere in his subconscious mind. An everlasting smile on your face without a reason that ur close pals, ur parents would love to see and feel happy about. U are gonna wake up with something to look forward every morning, with a determination to do something and be happy and satisfied about it when you end your day for every single day you live of your life.
so coming back to the first question "who is the luckiest person on this planet?" according to me a person, who knows what to do in his life from day one that is gonna give him an everlasting joy and an unbounded happiness. Let's say ,a sportstar who knows he wants to stay associated with the game for every single moment of his life after he had first played the game at the age of four, may be. My dream is to find out what I want to do in life that's gonna make me happy forever.
Now it does raise a few questions:
1) what if I never found out?
2) what if I think I found it and then it wasn't to be?
I have an opinion on these questions too but may be some other time...
This post is not really meant to show any kind of light in your life but yes it's an effort to pull some strings in your heart as well in your mind and yeah if things got a bit messy in the post then please let it go. I am just an amateur :).

First of all! WELCOME TO BLOGOSPHERE! :)
Deep thinking..very nice :)
Happy blogging!
~Hema
hmmm... really makes me think...
for my part... i never felt like I don't belong in BITS...
going by my interests... if not an engineer I would've been an explorer...
but too late for that... it turns out it no longer is the 16th century... they've already put the entire world on google earth... so why not just become an engineer and earn lots of money then?
as for the exploring... i'm happy cycling outside the campus and figuring out the fastest way to reach pahadi.
@ hema: thanks a lot :)
@ vineet: :D as long as u are happy other things don't really matter
Nice theory
Retrosepctive, as I said. But yes, relative too.Happiness wud depend on how a person grades the things in his/her life. But yes, I do agree that it would be a virtue if you knew the thing/moment/position/person or whatever else what ypu crave for.And yes, most importantly, achieve it.
firstly, welcome to the blogging world. a nice post...deep thinking :)
well in my case...if not an engineer, i would have wanted to be an astronomer. :P
im happy with what i am doing :)
Nice post dude, but when you said that it was gonna be abt something important to u, never thought it wud be abt THIS :P
On a lighted note, this is one of the ways tapan will rag his jus: by asking them if they are default engineers :D
Ok.. Despite you bugging me..(Yes! I said Bugging) for comments, I wont simply come n say Appy Blogging!
Excellent topic. (Strange Chandra didn't take a swipe at me on this ;)) Hols have really made us come out with our introspections.
Yup, my case is somewhere der. As a friend blogged, he chose engineering because it seemed to have the toughest competition associated with it.
As I kept tellin every1 since my interactions, Engineering(esp. BITS) gave me more options than others if I had to become disillusioned somewhere down the line with what I was doing.
Sad excuse, I know :)
Luckiest/Happiest person for me is one who at every intermittent stage of his life goes the way he wants, standing upto the pressures of it, and not necessarily knowing from the outset what he wants to do.
The one you talked about draws a curve between an initial and a final point, and keeps on modifying it under the pressure of reaching the final point.
As for the sportstar example, my choice is Bjorn Borg, the day he stopped enjoying tennis, he left it. Or maybe the day after, Doesn't matter :)
My My... That was was heavy :)
Good that you are thinking..thts the beginning ,,and yes "white Charcoal" very impressive..I think the deal is to live in the present.. Ask yourself what is the thing i'll like doing the best right now and do it!!
"1) what if I never found out?
2) what if I think I found it and then it wasn't to be?"
i don't believe this! you read minds or what?
this is the biggest question in my life, especially since i came to BITS.
Sometimes, the people here really scare me...
Nice to know I have company though :)
gr8 strt!looks like i'm gonna enjoy readin ur blog :)
@ rachit: thanks man!
@ gauri: achievement is hardly what i am talkin about here journey is more important then achievement itself...
@ bhavsar: thanks man! dude question here is even if u are are u ready to give it up for that one single dream ????
@ amey: no re not really planning to rag juz lost interest all of a sudden
@ vineet: i agree on your way yes but then it seems that u know its pressure only for people who are lookin it from outside if u really wanna do it then pressure is juz a part of it and u enjoy it too!!!
all tht we are doing maybe just for opportunities.......
to be able to do wat we want later on
it aint the engineering only
we have another 4 yrs to explore wat we want to do for those of us who are confused
toh u cud say engineering by default!coz we didnt noe for sure wat we wanted to do....
f u man. I always wanted to come to BITS and always wanted to be an engineer. ofcourse that i no longer consider it as my dream occupation is another question altogether. welcome to blogdom mate
yeah tapan...... good thot....... i also beleive.... the worst thing that can happen to sum1 is wen he loses his/her purpose or aim in life.......
at r stage.... the purpose seems a lil cloudy...... but as the time will pass..... things will start bcumin clear itself!!......... so no wrries......... b happy!!
@ malveeka: thanks :) yeah BINGO!!! deal is yes to live in a present be happy about still seekin for ur dream ( hopefully i conveyed what i wanted to )
shuchi : :) thanks!! i guess then we have an " intellectual conmversation " waitin for us. I shall look forward to your company in comments section!!
:)
@ shailee : one of my reasons to join bits...yes bits gives a launch pad and a cushion in case in your journey u fail and need a pit stop...
@ anurag : thanks...neither do i
hey....gd wrk...its so real
bt i believe if v strt doing smthing dat v like,fr 16 hrs a day maybe it ll not remain dat intresting to us....
smthing dat v lik to do,v like do it whenever v want nt wen others want us to do dat.....
as far as exploring is concerned it makes d "journey" more intresting and smtimes u can find smthing dat is more intrestng den wt u like........
@tapan: yeah, there are *some things* that can make a person lose interest in ragging [:P]
Tapan,
Think abt one thing though...if u do take the plunge and do wat u want, thrs no guarantee ull survive against those heavy odds against u,plus,u might get disillusioned later with wat u wanna do. So in my opinion,a middle path is always the safest..Answer:Dual degree! science+ engineering. On a more serious note,it pays to keep all options open without rejecting options outright.
there are a few things id like to say ...
what your good at and what you love to do are two non-intersecting sets for most people , its an issue of staying happy thought your life, say a kid chooses to play hockey , he loves playing it but he has to leave the game at the age of 30 for obvious reasons , he just neednt be the best at it because if you push too hard , play becomes work and the purpose is lost , so he gives it his best , but the money doesnt come now , after 30 how will he support himself and his family to every needs that cause for "eternal happiness" ... hes lost his hockey too ... its not always about satisfying , its about satisficing ....sometimes its about the money too ... its not gonna give you happiness , but you cant have happiness without it
@hunter : riskless aint fun!! wats d point of takin shortest path if u gonna be frustrated thruout it?
@surbhi : yeah true journey is d main thing
@ srikrishna : hmmm yes aim is to stay happy throughout the life...sometimes cheese just moves from 1 place to another ...
welcome welcome sir..
starting off wid a six man...
i dont need to ask nething bout the post.. coz we can discuss it any time we want as we gen do :P
hmmmm....i never thought u wud write somethng like this.....but i always new u had the talent to. nice one....but what is the fandu of white charcoal??? wellwhat u hav written is true....very true...many ppl go where the herd leader leads them...so let us now search the realm of our dreams...chal keep writing...ab khush??
Dream on Tapan!
Nice post. Keep thinking, it will surely expose to you, the you.
Happy thinking!
interesting trail of thought....
nice tapan
seriously stirs the thought process
but i think u need to elaborate on the title a it
bout wat u thought wen u were keeping it
hi thapan...
i really liked your post..
but you say that people should pursue their dream.
that is fine.. but consider this case.. we are simple 18-19 years old.. we might go with the flow as far our career is concerned.. but we are influenced by many things especially in our subconcious.. so that would help form our "dream occupation" which may not be that dreamy at all..
so i agree that to be part of the routine isn't good.. but to branch out completely by just feeling around is risky.. and can have disastrous results.. thank you
this is rahul btw.. uh fresher remember ? eric cartman is my google name..
@ saurav and ankita : thanks
@ manas : yeah ofcourse.
@ chalice : let's talk abt it after a year, shall we? hmm not really talkin abt dream occupation my friend..
i like it, maestro! i like the fact that it's simple yet deep. keep writing - would love to keep reading! i've decided to add ur blog to the links on my blog...
Have subscribed to the comment feed :) More activity on this page than on the blog
ummmmm now thats seriouly a six as manas said it .....i reely liked it ..i think u hve touched a very sensitive topic which is generally not debated so much but still it is a big issue ...u noe we have been talking abt this endlessly when ever we meet but as u hoped to touch other peoples (heart) strings let me tel you u have , and i am saying this coz my frnd has read ur blog and said the same thing ...after reading ur blog i reely gave some thought on where do i stand in all this ....u noe what i got as my answer is that out of the few lucky ones i reely may be the one i reely love my feild not coz of chiks but because i will always be related to the peoples emotions directly and also my work reely gives me immense happiness ....probably sometimes i feel my pathetic marks in 12(which i still cant get how on earth can i get such marks )were blessings in disguise ..but i surely thank some one ( god as people say )... but even i had a dream of becomeing an astronaut..
but never the less i feel every person can persue what he likes even tho it may not be his feild may be not at a very large scale but at a small one .......and gajjo i think we all will defintely do that ..........
@ pathik : yeah we did a hell lotta discussion on it neways...yeah lucky u are to an extent i knw u love articheture...can u please enlighten me a bit more on dis " frnd " :P
hey buddy..
pulling strings eh..
but i must say that u have pulled some serious strings beautifully..
i feel every person has a role to play in this universe.
the luckiest person is the one who knows what his role is.
but the luckiest of the luckiest people are those versatile actors, who can do justice to any role been offered to them.
there are many people who invent their role instead of discovering it (for eg. me about 3-4 yrs ago). they try to convince their subconscious mind about the things not made for them.
i tried convincing my subconscious about being an engineer. but i'm glad that i didn't succeed in convincing.
i 'guess' now i've discovered my role and i'm happy for myself..
cheers..
